We help state and federal governments, school districts, companies, and foundations gain insight into the ever-evolving digital learning landscape so they can successfully plan and implement best practices related to educational technology. Using a student-made board game about elements and the periodic table has several benefits. Students learn about chemistry as they create their game and as they solve someone else’s. They also practice working cooperatively if they create the game with someone else.
After reading your article, I had to comment on a part written where you wrote; Education, on the other hand, opens the mind, encourages a search for truth and develops a mind that can engage critically with many different ideas… I believe this whole heartedly. If you allow yourself the opportunity to RECEIVE fact based information, you enable yourself a better opportunity at making SOUND decisions. A conscious mind is powerful and can’t be deceived… Great topic!
I am thinking about homeschooling and looking for all sides. You have some valid points even when others disagree. There are pitfalls in regular education that I am fighting. I certainly appreciate your point of view that helps me understand the process better. We can all learn from you. … Read more
To answer the very first question…that began this thread. H_ll to the No. When do we have time to be innocent…we have our whole life to be boring adults. We should protect our innocent ones as long as possible…say at least until…Junior High! Then I would say H_ll yes…they need a good foundation in sex education to help give them proper info and help to safeguard their future. Because from that point on they will have working knowledge…and can make some proper decisions based on that information. And hopefully, the parents will have aided in their own strong beliefs and backings for their family to the child. While teachers do contribute to the invigorating knowledgeable atmosphere in the classrooms, the students are the ones that really make it happen. In all of the classes I have been in or visited, every student is always focused intently on the teacher, absorbing all of the knowledge being taught with a passion that is truly astounding. I constantly am challenging myself to find a student that does not give the teacher his or her undivided attention but to this day; I have yet to find even one student with his or her head … Read more
Start here to get Minecraft: Education Edition for your classroom, school, or district. The downside to this book is that it is full of internet sources, like many internet sources they move around a bit on the web. So some of the links either are no longer there or will have to be searched for. Cool resource! I have been to the Shel Silverstein one. It’s cool! Blessed by the poetry angel!
This lens is a great eye-opener to help people understand how homelessness happens. Blessed by a SquidAngel. We cut out bits of a shark drawing and wrote questions and answers in lift the flap form. PS, as a home-schooled child, I graduated from high school early, from university early, have a few degrees, and am now a teacher!
No, I haven’t, but I can see that these would be very useful indeed! Love the crocodile toothache video! I did vote UP and interesting on this hub. This homeless topic is not beautiful or funny, at least to me. Christine – good to see you here! Thanks for the great comment, and I agree with your points.

How do we reinvent education? These TED Talks explore the latest thinking — from teachers, parents, kids — on how to build a better school. The subject involves other areas of study, including humanities, natural sciences, and the social sciences. The separation of the education department into two has made the situation worse, because accountability is now further diluted. A great article reminding us all what’s really important when bringing up children. I especially agree with limiting screen time and encouraging physical activity.
This is a very silly question and a simple one to answer. Go to NY City and you see homeless people. Or in Newark NJ’s airport. The answer to why they don’t just get jobs can’t be oversimplified. Doing, thinking, feeling, and acting—as a student of psychology, you will get to study all aspects of human behavior. You will learn not only about the general characteristics of human behavior, but also about the differences.
There will be fewer free baby sitters”, more parental involvement and, in the end, perhaps a return to the standard family structure we have enjoyed in the past. That seems really right. My school is very academically oriented, and the most imp thing … Read more
The decision to homeschool your child is a huge, life changing decision. A parent should consider all possible advantages and disadvantages before beginning schooling from their kitchen tabletop. Because of the strong feelings on both sides of the homeschooling debate, sometimes searching parents end up only consuming information from other homeschooling parents. These resources tend to be a bit skewed as they are written by parents that feel they need to defend their choices instead of giving accurate pros and cons to homeschooling. With a busy concert schedule around the world, awards and scholarships, and even recitals for the Queen Mother, and the Queen and Prince Consort of Denmark, I’m always amazed Melanie has any time to maintain such a fantastic blog and be active on several social media sites.
Sorry to hear that, Tamara. I don’t think it’s limited to the Croatian government though – the lack of teaching kids good ‘thinking skills’ is a worldwide problem. No point in stuffing their heads full of facts if they don’t know how to apply their knowledge. We need innovators in education; people with passion who don’t need rules and guidelines to inspire our youngsters.

Disclosure: I’m a passionate informal educator and I have a few years of experience as a high school teacher for English as a second language and Physics. I don’t want to say education is unneeded, I simply wish it would change for the better. So let me get on with my point. Write the name of each continent on a piece of paper and place the 7 pieces of paper in a jar or bowl or bag. Let students come up one at a time and draw out a piece of paper. Blindfold them, spin them around and then lead them to the map and let them try to fly their plane to the continent they drew. Make sure you have candy for all the students who are successful.
Business: Consumer psychologists study consumers’ behaviors to find insights that could helpful for businesses. Industrial-organizational psychologists, on the other hand, focus their attention within the company, looking for ways to increase productivity through things such as better employee selection and training or a better designed or organized workplace. Psychologists can work for these businesses as full-time employees or as consultants.

When I read about PBS losing funding, it irritates me because as a father of two I have seen how effective their programming is at being entertaining and educational. It doesn’t just stop at their TV programming, though; their website is unmatched when it comes to fun and education. very nice. can i borrow 2 bucks? i need to buy a coffee to keep me up all night reading your books. I asked about the spirituality because of the Waldorf belief in anthroposophy. I believe it is woven into the way the schools teach and work with the students. Very nice – always in need of some great clipart for projects and presentations.

We ignite student curiosity and inspire educators to reimagine learning with award-winning digital content and powerful professional development. She did nothing much reading-wise for over a year. I continued to read to her, and bought her a read-along Leapfrog. We turned reading into an entertainment rather than a learning experience. Then one day we were in Borders and she spotted some books related to TV shows and enthusiastically seized a pile of Bratz books. Way too old for her as she was only six at the time. She asked me to read them to her. I glanced at them and they were pretty awful, it has to be said. So I told her, no, but I would buy one or two for her if she wanted. So I did and, because I refused to read them to her, she taught herself to read in about two weeks. I have never taught her spelling, grammar or punctuation yet, at 10 years old, she writes stories, plays, scripts and even ‘books’. Her level of English language is amazing and she has easily outstripped her brother.

I was so moved by Malala’s story and seeing her on television that I just had to put something down on paper. I had many of those same problems, but I was NOT homeschooled. I think you give public school far too much credit. It does not mean you will learn to get along with others, be able to write a paper according to a teacher’s wishes or get a date/get along with the opposite sex. You get out what you put in, no matter what your educational path.
While the left argues that our ailing public education system can be fixed with ever-greater quantities of taxpayer dollars, the more than $600 billion we currently spend nationwide reflects a large increase in funds over the last 30 years, in exchange for total stagnation – or worse, declines – in achievement. On the college level, subsidies meant to help college students struggling to pay tuition have instead caused prices to skyrocket well above inflation.

Over the past twenty-five years, the educational advancement made by women has been significant. The gaps for educational attainment between the genders have all but disappeared for the young women being educated today. While girls still lag somewhat behind boys on mathematical and science achievement, girls in high school average higher grades and reach higher achievement levels in reading and writing compared to same age boys. The discrepancies in achievement by subject persist into adulthood. It has been shown that women between the ages of 16 and 65 achieved higher scores on comprehension and interpretation of prose that similar age men. There were also less women (40 percent) scoring at a low level in these areas compared to men (44 percent). Consistent with finding from earlier ages, women do not score as well as men in number related subjects such as mathematics (Sax, 2008). Games and creative activities can be fun ways to learn about chemical elements and the periodic table. A course can’t be run entirely on games, however. Students need variety in the type of activities that they do in order to maintain their interest in a subject. In addition, a game may be effective for attaining some … Read more
