But, we do not live in a nation that truly values education. The solution from politicians has been a test them til they drop mentality. As a teacher who worked in banking and finance, I can tell you there is an incredible difference between the quality of training between these two professions. I received hands-on training with specifics in banking…in teaching I learned about Dewey, theory, etc. My job every day is the delivery of a 45 minute lesson. NOT ONE TIME have I ever been presented with an example of an excellent, high quality lesson in teaching history. I have attended workshops, conferences, joined lesson plan web sites, purchase countless books. There is nothing!!

With the internet, universal access to education is possible, but its potential is hindered by increasingly restrictive copyright laws and incompatible technologies. The Open Education program at Creative Commons works to minimize these barriers, supporting the CC mission through education, advocacy and outreach on using the right licenses and open policies to maximize the benefits of open educational resources (OER) and the return on investment in publicly funded education resources. Our work cuts across all levels of education (primary – secondary – tertiary) and sectors of industry (non-profit – corporate – government). Similarities – in systems or even in ideas – that schools share internationally have led to an increase in international student exchanges. The European Socrates- Erasmus Program 38 facilitates exchanges across European universities. The Soros Foundation 39 provides many opportunities for students from central Asia and eastern Europe. Programs such as the International Baccalaureate have contributed to the internationalization of education. The global campus online, led by American universities, allows free access to class materials and lecture files recorded during the actual classes.

Start here to get Minecraft: Education Edition for your classroom, school, or district. Practice, practice, practice….and have fun, what a great approach for developing reading skills. We work on paper and stick the work in his book, for every piece of work we do. It cuts out a lot of stress and anxiety. It is. I only wish I had had the same opportunity when I was a kid. Having said that, the fact that we had to go to school was balanced by the freedom we had outside of school hours.
I did read your comments Deidre and I just happen to disagree not from people who write about this, but from living the experience. I only know that my son is ahead of the class with reading in a mainstreamed environment with having ASL as his first language. And you are biased if you are using dogma ideas when you are talking about someone’s culture or ideas that you disagree with. It’s not a religion but a culture which is quite obvious to most people. My prior post is also not shown here. All the best to you and yours.

De Mille suggests that there are three types of schooling: public school, professional education and leadership education. The Thomas Jefferson method claims to be a system that trains people for leadership roles. Remind him of the letter shapes by speaking the shape of each letter out loud as he is writing: up, down, round etc. However, there are cheap and easy ways to keep them with a supply of new toys. Then, playing with toys can be a great way to keep them entertained. This is what I do to make sure the toys get played with a lot.
A sound education levels the playing field in a country where the field has multiple access points, but only one entrance for blacks. Never have so many black youths been lost to the penal system, to the streets, to death by the hands of law enforcers and by their own hands. And as observed by Michigan State University sociologist, Dr. Carl S. Taylor , there are those who prey on the lack of opportunity and education; thereby, organized crime units emerge from underground and teach young minds the ways to a criminal lifestyle.

There are many assumptions about homeless people. Perhaps the most common is that all of them are too lazy to work. Having been there myself and having worked with many others in the same situation, I have to say that for the vast majority of homeless people, the assumption that they are lazy is dead wrong. I’m sorry your life has not gone the way you wished it had, but everyone has regrets. Public education does not make a person immune to poor life decisions, or there would be no such thing as mid-life crisis. And public school doesn’t gurantee success in a college setting. Everyone has different learning styles and only a small percentage of students actually learn well with standard teaching practices. I imagine your parents made a lot of sacrifices to give you the education you had, believing it to be the best option. I wonder if your mom didn’t tailor your learning to suit your learning style, which is why you noticed such a difference when you entered a traditional classroom setting. I’m sure if you chose to focus on the benefits of your home education, you would find many things you hadn’t considered before.

We are in charge of enforcing education law and regulations and continuing to reform and improve public school programs. As I began to get more successful in my work life, I stopped going to junior college for a while because of my work hours and the challenges college was providing. I didn’t really have to overcome adversity in my homeschool setting, so it was a coping skill I needed but had not yet obtained.
Excellent hub. I have four children in grade school now. Fortunately, my oldest is able to attend SCF Collegiate School, she started last year for sixth grade. It’s based on a European learning style. This will be her second year in it and we couldn’t be happier.
Yes, Denise, our expectations for public school teachers are unrealistically high. They cannot be everything to everybody, but we so want them to be. With this huge push for academic rigor at younger and younger ages, I see children getting turned off to reading. They’re getting instructed on … Read more
Population education is a recent innovation and, as such, is subject to various misinterpretations and misunderstandings. To many people, population education is family planning; to others, it is another name for sex education; still to many others, including teachers, it is synonymous with the teaching of demography and/or population studies. In economically depressed areas in an economically recessed economy and hiring preferences (thus discrimination for the unprefered) homelessness is an outcome of unemployment, not the cause. They don’t pay 5 to 10 cents a can for recycling, or that might help. 2 cents isn’t enough. Some people want you to work for free…not food, not shelter, not trade…but as a slave. Weird world. The solution is equity in hiring.
I don’t have kids, but I think this is a great idea and resource for parents who want to their children to surf the web safely. The internet is flooded with all sorts of information and a lot of filth, so it’s important to ensure that kids go to websites that are safe…well done!

Controversy has raged among educators and professionals working with children with profound hearing loss about whether deaf children benefit from learning sign language. Whereas some argue that sign is the natural language of the deaf, others believe that sign may inhibit the ability to learn vocal and written language. Waldorf schools don’t encourage reading before the second grade and are slow with introducing academics. I have a friend who switched her son from Waldorf school after first grade and he didn’t read or write at all. It fits some people and the emphasis on natural wooden toys is nice if you consider it for a preschool but I am not sure about elementary school. My feelings about this school are mixed. I see a lot of snobbism among parents who sent their kids there.
I read all the comments above… I hope I didn’t miss any point. Except for the thoughts of Daniel Desembrana and comment of Cianeko (just above my posting), all other comments failed to focus on the link between K-12 and individual success or the nation’s economic progress. No one took a time to comment on the structure and content of both the traditional and K-12 systems … Read more
The decision to homeschool your child is a huge, life changing decision. A parent should consider all possible advantages and disadvantages before beginning schooling from their kitchen tabletop. Because of the strong feelings on both sides of the homeschooling debate, sometimes searching parents end up only consuming information from other homeschooling parents. These resources tend to be a bit skewed as they are written by parents that feel they need to defend their choices instead of giving accurate pros and cons to homeschooling. This brings up another big problem with education in America. We don’t have any challenging high school exit or university entrance exams , which are common in other countries. These exams often determine whether a student will make it to university and can exclude them from certain majors if they don’t earn enough points. These exams create a strong external motivation to learn. The SATs may prevent a student from attending a particular university but not from attending university altogether. Plus, the SATs are relatively easy and aren’t based directly on the high school curricula covering numerous subject areas.
