From students and teachers to administrators and employers, at ETS we provide a range of solutions designed to meet the many different needs — and goals — of partners like you. I’d also like to mention Elizabeth Weise’s excellent website, Mandarin Immersion Parents Council , which I’ve come across often over the years. It contains a wealth of information about all things related to Mandarin immersion education in this country, as well as abroad. I’ve never met Ms. Weise, but I understand that she lives just across the Bay in San Francisco, and that she’s very involved at an immersion school there.
Wow, wow, wow! I tutor dyslexic children and I am so impressed with your efforts. The kids are so special, so bright, curious, wonderful, creative… I could go on and on! I think all schools should teach their dyslexic children like you teach your son. In fact… wouldn’t all students do better with more support, more creativity and drawing, and less homework? I love everything about this hub!!!!!!
There are certainly some issues with the law, but on the whole the IDEA is a requirement to allow children with disabilities to have equal access to the curriculum, and an equal opportunity to succeed. In general, the criticisms are not applicable to the majority of children receiving services under an individualized educational plan (IEP). A number of children receive reading supports, speech therapy, and other services to create an environment which fosters success. While the initial services cost taxpayers money, there are cost savings over the long term – a child who obtains an appropriate education is more likely to be employed and become a productive member of society. Refusing to educate a significant proportion of the population (up to 10% of American children receive services under the IDEA) would create a greater economic problem in the long run.
My daughter is a special education teacher and utilizes this style of education by decorating her classroom with educational posters and charts. This gave me the inspirational idea and found that children enjoy and appreciate the decorative learning aids in their room – especially as they develop study habits and retain the knowledge by the repetition of viewing the wall art decor.
I told everyone in the school who was willing to listen that my son was dyslexic. I told his class teacher that my son and I would be doing our homework together and that I would be supporting him in every way I could. I said that he would be drawing his homework and that I would be writing down his words, unless he wanted to write, of course.
Since psychology was recognized as a distinct field of study, it has split into many specializations. Now, the American Psychological Association lists 56 divisions focusing on everything from how the brain physically responds to habits and interactions, how to measure aspects of personality and behaviors in the first place, how to use that knowledge of psychology to improve schools, workplaces, and communities, how to make planes safer and sell more products, and how to help people with psychological problems.
