Literacy is probably the single-most important part of education. Without literacy, all other learning is impossible. Literacy involves using reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing to gain more knowledge. Without the ability to do any of these skills, there is absolutely no way to acquire more knowledge. Literacy is essential for learning. It is crucial that language arts teachers are not the only ones in the school stressing the importance of literacy. While the language arts teachers may be the only ones truly teaching literacy, it is the job of all educators to facilitate literacy learning. Literacy must come before any other learning can occur, and we cannot grow as a society without literacy. Dmitri Mendeleev was a nineteenth century Russian chemist. He’s credited with the formation of the periodic table, even though other researchers before him had noticed the appearance of periodicity in collections of elements. And yet, kids in countries where it is not mandatory nor free dream of getting an education and going to school to escape the drudgery of their work.

Update on the Leap Frog Letter Factory: My 3 year old son loves it! He asked to watch it three times the first day we brought it home from the library and now he sings the song, sounding out letters as he goes. It’s great! Thanks for the recommendation, Shawn.
Studying at university is cool because you learn academic skills. As a result, you end up with a more critical attitude, and you do not believe everything published or broadcast. And at one time or another, you’ll get to do research about a topic of personal interest.
Another great outside activity. Chalk in the backyard or on the sidewalk outside. It can be washed away when the rain comes or before then with a big bucket of water. If you have an easel, you could put it up in the kitchen and use the chalk on the board too.
If this is your strategy for success, the only thing that will eventually show up in your mailbox is an eviction notice. I believe … Read more

Thank you Jane !!! I just want all parents to know really what is out there. I am not against any method I am for deaf kids being able to read. I am truly tired of the divisions and parents being given information on only one method. The scientific approach is not being used in deaf education.
This lens is a great eye-opener to help people understand how homelessness happens. Blessed by a SquidAngel. We cut out bits of a shark drawing and wrote questions and answers in lift the flap form. PS, as a home-schooled child, I graduated from high school early, from university early, have a few degrees, and am now a teacher!

Just a quick note to say how well-written and full of information I found this article. I do not know anyone with dyslexic children, but I did know a dyslexic adult at a job once who was an administrator, a job with numbers. He always needed someone to check his work as a second pair of eyes, nonetheless he was an excellent and highly successful administrator for a large medical practice. Bravo for working with your son and bravo for you son’s ability and determination to adapt. Great tips.
Historical agendas have predetermined what persons of color can and cannot do in America’s educational systems. In 1895 the United State Supreme Court decided, via Plessey v. Ferguson, that equal facilities could be separate for blacks and whites. Plessey v. Ferguson created the separate but equal doctrine” that was practiced … Read more

In a way this is my main point and it should require little more explanation by now. The sad truth about modern education is that it works to destroy creativity, personality and personal initiative in favor of standardizing people and their minds in order for them to fit better in to a the factories of 200 years ago.
I would not have put the above statement into this hub because it is simply not true. Education is about liberation and not indoctrination but you can only enhance on freedom because freedom is an impossibility. Nothing is free and anybody who thinks carefully about freedom will know … Read more
During the time that my children attended a Waldorf School I was amazed at the positive influence it had on our family. Although they attend school during the day, they carry home with them a peaceful yet enthusiastic sense of the world and this is engaging and contagious. I feel that all families could benefit from this educational method, even without having a child attend a Waldorf School, so I have made a list of suggestions. Description: If you can’t attend education sessions because your schedule is too busy or would you like a copy of what was presented—purchase the recording option now. De Mille suggests that there are three types of schooling: public school, professional education and leadership education. The Thomas Jefferson method claims to be a system that trains people for leadership roles. Remind him of the letter shapes by speaking the shape of each letter out loud as he is writing: up, down, round etc. However, there are cheap and easy ways to keep them with a supply of new toys. Then, playing with toys can be a great way to keep them entertained. This is what I do to make sure the toys get played with a lot.
A sound education levels the playing field in a country where the field has multiple access points, but only one entrance for blacks. Never have so many black youths been lost to the penal system, to the streets, to death by the hands of law enforcers and by their own hands. And as observed by Michigan State University sociologist, Dr. Carl S. Taylor , there are those who prey on the lack of opportunity and education; thereby, organized crime units emerge from underground and teach young minds the ways to a criminal lifestyle.

Thingiverse Education provides over a hundred free lessons that make teaching with a 3D printer easier and more effective for a variety of grade levels and subjects. It also provides a community where educators can exchange best practices or remix projects. I shall be completely civil in my response. I do not WATCH television at all. I read thank you! What I am saying is based upon experience and commonsense. The purpose of a college education is to have a HIGHER and BETTER quality of life and relationships, not to settle for an average Joe/Josephina when one can do better, Jeez! Why are people so content to settle for an amoebic, humdrum, barely surviving existence when they can have an affluently fantastic life? Well, I am totally nonplussed here! I thought that intelligent, well educated people want an affluent life-well, I guess not! Well, YOUR loss, not mine!
You’re funny, gm, funny and so sad at the same time. I really do hope that one day you learn some of what is worth knowing in this world, but it won’t come from a book when you do, and it won’t come from a college. It will come from the world … Read more
Disclosure: I’m a passionate informal educator and I have a few years of experience as a high school teacher for English as a second language and Physics. I don’t want to say education is unneeded, I simply wish it would change for the better. So let me get on with my point. Write the name of each continent on a piece of paper and place the 7 pieces of paper in a jar or bowl or bag. Let students come up one at a time and draw out a piece of paper. Blindfold them, spin them around and then lead them to the map and let them try to fly their plane to the continent they drew. Make sure you have candy for all the students who are successful.
