During the time that my children attended a Waldorf School I was amazed at the positive influence it had on our family. Although they attend school during the day, they carry home with them a peaceful yet enthusiastic sense of the world and this is engaging and contagious. I feel that all families could benefit from this educational method, even without having a child attend a Waldorf School, so I have made a list of suggestions. Gibbs (2004) maintained that black males have been stereotyped and often described …by one or more of the five Ds: dumb, deprived, dangerous, deviant and disturbed” And even though these words …are seldom spoken or written, they reflect mainstream cultural values and are often reflected in educational policy and practice”. He further argues that black men have been miseducated, mishandled, mislabeled and mistreated.
Thank you for your comment! It’s true, college is so expensive, and tuition keeps on rising! I was lucky that I was able to get grants and scholarships to pay my way through. I also transferred from community college to a University which saved a lot of money as well. I agree, we really do need to look at what other … Read more
I think blaming teachers is extremely unfair. They are part of a bureaucracy with no real control over what to teach and how to teach. Teachers don’t control curricula, standards or testing. They have to make do with whatever materials, worksheets and curricula they are given, even if they believe that they are ineffective. They have to prepare students for tests that often don’t effectively test student ability. The belief that teachers are responsible for educational failure has lead to ideas like merit pay and compensation based on student performance. This is a really good article and I agree with Robwrite. I also want to add that we are all intelligent in our own way. This is why I do not agree with our current system of education. While one student might excel in math another might be better suited to the arts or maybe even building things such as an auto mechanic does. Why does our current educational system not encourage students to learn what they have an interest or an affinity to? Also, I would like to point out that the system fails students because they do not prepare them for the real world. Kids do not know … Read more

Education Pioneers recruits, develops, and connects professionals from diverse backgrounds to solve problems from outside of the classroom so students and teachers succeed inside of the classroom. Absolutely true! They all had an easy go education and even if they had strived hard with the books, most of their career is irrelevant to their education. Or more to say, most of them followed their heart I guess which is kind of getting drifted with today’s curriculum….but still, it’s so unfair that some of us had to toil our way in and out of things.
Thank-you Kylyssa for sharing these incredible and heart rendering experiences. I hope that your readers will gain the insights necessary to a fuller understanding of this epedemic in America and further will gain empathy and compassion for Homeless PEOPLE. Many Blessings!
Educated unemployment is a type of unemployment in which educated people are unable to find job, they have a degree but that degree does not get them a job. Literacy is probably the single-most important part of education. Without literacy, all other learning is impossible. Literacy involves using reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing to gain more knowledge. Without the ability to do any of these skills, there is absolutely no way to acquire more knowledge. Literacy is essential for learning. It is crucial that language arts teachers are not the only ones in the school stressing the importance of literacy. While the language arts teachers may be the only ones truly teaching literacy, it is the job of all educators to facilitate literacy learning. Literacy must come before any other learning can occur, and we cannot grow as a society without literacy. You’re right Ana! If that would be the mindset of every Filipino, especially the education administrators and teachers, the implementation would be far better that what we expect. God bless you. You say that the poor view more children as ways of expenditure! That makes no sense.

Still, it’s interesting to read about them. Life is the most exciting opportunity we have. But we have one shot. You graduate from college once, and that’s it. You’re going out of that nest. And you have to find that courage that’s deep, deep, deep in there. Every step of the way.

New skills and knowledge can spark a lifetime of change. Every day, EDC’s programs in education, health, and economic development deliver life-changing opportunities to those who need them most. A bulletin board works well for a jeopardy board. One way to set up the game is as follows. I won’t counter #4, but would like to mention for those students who have a serious hobby or interest, they have more time to pursue it. For me, it was writing fiction. For my older brother, it was computers and robots.
Again, taking the case of India, the education system is geared to making an engineer or a doctor or an MBA of every student. The pressure on students is so much that many commit suicide, unable to cope up. Scribenet – thanks for the warm and kind words. Unless you’re lucky enough to personally know a school teacher or education professional, finding a comprehensive Brainetics review online can be a daunting task. Instead of writing alone we work together. We talk, discuss, research and make beautiful books. This takes dedication and time on my part, but it works, so it’s worth it. It is not exceptional (in the UK) for the children of poor people to become successful and wealthy, as it is not exceptional for the children of the wealthy to become poor although many are sheltered by family money.
In Pakistan, there is no concept of counselling service for students so many students opt wrong subjects which does not ensure better career opportunitiesSome students are forced by parents or societies norms to study subjects in which they have no interest. So their lack of interest causes failure and even if they succeed in securing degree by cramming they do not do well in their jobs due to lack of interest, their performance drops and eventually they lose job. This is due to defective education system in Pakistan in which students are not given career advice during their student life.

There are many assumptions about homeless people. Perhaps the most common is that all of them are too lazy to work. Having been there myself and having worked with many others in the same situation, I have to say that for the vast majority of homeless people, the assumption that they are lazy is dead wrong. I’m sorry your life has not gone the way you wished it had, but everyone has regrets. Public education does not make a person immune to poor life decisions, or there would be no such thing as mid-life crisis. And public school doesn’t gurantee success in a college setting. Everyone has different learning styles and only a small percentage of students actually learn well with standard teaching practices. I imagine your parents made a lot of sacrifices to give you the education you had, believing it to be the best option. I wonder if your mom didn’t tailor your learning to suit your learning style, which is why you noticed such a difference when you entered a traditional classroom setting. I’m sure if you chose to focus on the benefits of your home education, you would find many things you hadn’t considered before.

I love to read my students’ poems, and these interactives and poetry collections provide them inspiration and guidance. I’ve seen sparks of creativity fly for children and teens alike. The collections of poems include classic favorites as well as works by contemporary authors AND kids. And readers have added another dozen of their favorite websites to the readers’ recommendations list at the end of this article. Just using the bathroom is now an issue due to current protestations of cross gender kids as is having to worry about physical safety when confronted with mentally deficient students who can pretty much do as they please without consequences. In the UK, the 1880 Act of Parliament made education compulsory for all children under the age of ten. This was extended to 11 and eventually 13 in the 1893 and 1899 Acts of Parliament respectively.
Too much praise makes children overly dependent on others’ opinions. Studies show parents make a more positive impact when they extol their children’s effort and not their performance.
