My oldest son is four years old and my daughter is 2 ½. They both really like to watch TV. I try to limit the amount of TV they watch, but I’ll admit that sometimes I’m thankful for the 30 minutes of peace I can get from popping a DVD into the player. Since my kids watch at least 30 minutes of TV a day, I make sure the content is educational. The DVDs listed below are some of my top choices as a parent. So while I’m cooking dinner, making a grocery list, or just needing a few minutes to myself, these are some of the DVDs my children really enjoy. Most of them can be checked out for free at your local library. I read an article about math teaching a few years back and one teacher’s comment really stood out. The teacher said that the way he’s required to teach math, it’s almost impossible for students to learn. A second grade teacher called into a radio show I was listening to and said that because of state standards she wasn’t able to spend enough time introducing fractions. As a result, she said many students went into third … Read more
From students and teachers to administrators and employers, at ETS we provide a range of solutions designed to meet the many different needs — and goals — of partners like you. I’d also like to mention Elizabeth Weise’s excellent website, Mandarin Immersion Parents Council , which I’ve come across often over the years. It contains a wealth of information about all things related to Mandarin immersion education in this country, as well as abroad. I’ve never met Ms. Weise, but I understand that she lives just across the Bay in San Francisco, and that she’s very involved at an immersion school there.
Wow, wow, wow! I tutor dyslexic children and I am so impressed with your efforts. The kids are so special, so bright, curious, wonderful, creative… I could go on and on! I think all schools should teach their dyslexic children like you teach your son. In fact… wouldn’t all students do better with more support, more creativity and drawing, and less homework? I love everything about this hub!!!!!!

Raising your nose into the air at the sight of a 2 year old playing outside in diapers is fluff no matter how important it might seem to let the world know you are disgusted. Donating clothing to help those in need is what counts. The pendulum of the mind oscillates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong.

Inclusive education is about the integration approach of the disabled learners in schools. It is under this inclusion model that learners with special needs spend most or all of their time with non-disabled learners. While inclusive education has its benefits, there are enormous challenges hindering its effective implementation especially in developing countries. This article briefly examines the following: Inadequate Educational Facilities, Poor Teacher Training, Poor policy implementation. There are certainly some issues with the law, but on the whole the IDEA is a requirement to allow children with disabilities to have equal access to the curriculum, and an equal opportunity to succeed. In general, the criticisms are not applicable to the majority of children receiving services under an individualized educational plan (IEP). A number of children receive reading supports, speech therapy, and other services to create an environment which fosters success. While the initial services cost taxpayers money, there are cost savings over the long term – a child who obtains an appropriate education is more likely to be employed and become a productive member of society. Refusing to educate a significant proportion of the population (up to 10% of American children receive services under the IDEA) would create a … Read more
Thingiverse Education provides over a hundred free lessons that make teaching with a 3D printer easier and more effective for a variety of grade levels and subjects. It also provides a community where educators can exchange best practices or remix projects. It’s easier for people to think that the homeless are just lazy and prefer to live on handouts. It gives people a sense of control over their own lives, thinking that it cannot happen to them because they are not lazy and do have jobs. Thanks for this lens. Very stereotype-breaking.
I applaud to you! Thank you! I have someone speaking my mind!Vote up and useful! hmm… There is infact a big difference in educated/exposed to culture vs the opposite though. Nevertheless, educated does not have to mean college grad. Intelligence always seeks out learning whether in an institution, in life, or self taught.
Unfortunately, everybody knows this but the big institutions are scared from change. Tony, this is really an insightful profile of an educated person. You are, for sure, such a person, and most of the hubbers on HubPages are. Pulling your hair out trying to relate to your teen or young adult? A change in perspective, … Read more
Psychology is the study of people’s behavior, performance, and mental operations. It also refers to the application of the knowledge, which can be used to understand events, treat mental health issues, and improve education, employment, and relationships. The subject lies at the intersection of applied, educational, and theoretical science. Each of us is different and each of us needs a different potion of skills and knowledge in order to develop to our full potential. If somebody has a particular talent, they should be allowed to develop it. While we are in school, our uniqueness is simply collapsing under the burden of an unnecessarily crammed school curriculum that wants to turn us into walking encyclopedias with little original taught. A musician should be allowed to be a musician, a mathematician should be allowed to be a mathematician and a runner should be allowed run.
This is one of the most contended and criticized portions of the IDEA law. there is a great deal of controversy over placing significantly disabled children in a mainstream classroom. The determination of a child’s least restrictive environment is fraught with emotions and is a difficult decision in some circumstances.
I have taken a couple of on-line … Read more
Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development. Major progress has been made towards increasing access to education at all levels and increasing enrolment rates in schools particularly for women and girls. Basic literacy skills have improved tremendously, yet bolder efforts are needed to make even greater strides for achieving universal education goals. For example, the world has achieved equality in primary education between girls and boys, but few countries have achieved that target at all levels of education. The Montessori philosophy works and I wish more schools would incorporate the methods. Especially in the primary grades, it’s important for the kids to actively be using their minds, and improving their cognitive skills. The educational materials used are excellent.

The LGBTQ+ Identity: A Toolkit for Educators Collection offers a series of digital media resources to help administrators, guidance counselors, and educators understand and effectively address the complex and difficult issues faced by LGBTQ students. I have two children who have received services under the IDEA law. My older son could not speak and had a severe expressive language delay: at the age of three, he had fewer than 20 words in his expressive vocabulary. He received an IEP under the Committee for Preschool Special Education and received speech therapy services for approximately 2 years. After a lot of hard work and techniques to develop his speech skills, he developed age-appropriate expressive language skills and was declassified. He is now in a mainstream kindergarten class and thriving.

There are many assumptions about homeless people. Perhaps the most common is that all of them are too lazy to work. Having been there myself and having worked with many others in the same situation, I have to say that for the vast majority of homeless people, the assumption that they are lazy is dead wrong. Why not have your own party at home and play lots of party games. This is particularly good if you have more than one child at home. Ideas include musical statues or balloon games. Blow up a balloon and see how long it takes to burst the balloon if you sit on it. Or see how long you can keep a balloon up in the air for. Hit the balloon to one another or play catch with balloons. My son loves simple games like this.
