I’d also like to mention Elizabeth Weise’s excellent website, Mandarin Immersion Parents Council , which I’ve come across often over the years. It contains a wealth of information about all things related to Mandarin immersion education in this country, as well as abroad. I’ve never met Ms. Weise, but I understand that she lives just across the Bay in San Francisco, and that she’s very involved at an immersion school there.
Wow, wow, wow! I tutor dyslexic children and I am so impressed with your efforts. The kids are so special, so bright, curious, wonderful, creative… I could go on and on! I think all schools should teach their dyslexic children like you teach your son. In fact… wouldn’t all students do better with more support, more creativity and drawing, and less homework? I love everything about this hub!!!!!!

The expensive private schools have always been good but beyond the financial reach of most. Let’s all hope and pray for Malala’s full recovery. I thought the poem was a very moving tribute!
One thing that became clear is that with almost no actual teaching going on, after all these years of ‘deschooling’, our children are at the same level, if not more advanced than their peers. Education happens – and it happens in a natural way. A college degree is the key to realizing the American dream, well worth the financial sacrifice because it is supposed to open the door to a world of opportunity.

ACE and 34 other higher education associations wrote to the leaders of the House and Senate budget and appropriations committees, asking them to maintain Congress’s historic commitment” to financial aid and research in FY 2018. Sorry to hear that, Tamara. I don’t think it’s limited to the Croatian government though – the lack of teaching kids good ‘thinking skills’ is a worldwide problem. No point in stuffing their heads full of facts if they don’t know how to apply their knowledge. We need innovators in education; people with passion who don’t need rules and guidelines to inspire our youngsters.
I highly recommend Alpha Smarts ( since writing this Alpha Smart has stopped making these because people have lap tops these days which pretty much do the same job- so there are some bargains to be had! While he eats, I look through his books and see what homework he has. I often have to phone a friend to ask, because he forgets so many things. I never tell him off for this because he never does not do it on purpose. It’s because he’s dyslexic. Informative and well done! I learned several things I did not know before and your hub refreshed my memory on a few others. Great Job!

I think blaming teachers is extremely unfair. They are part of a bureaucracy with no real control over what to teach and how to teach. Teachers don’t control curricula, standards or testing. They have to make do with whatever materials, worksheets and curricula they are given, even if they believe that they are ineffective. They have to prepare students for tests that often don’t effectively test student ability. The belief that teachers are responsible for educational failure has lead to ideas like merit pay and compensation based on student performance. I’m so impressed with this hub in particular Tony, (you’ve been busy recently). I’ve long since felt that much of the education that young people get at school is simply a training (indoctrination) given in order to maintain the status quo, and that it’s sheer insolence, and an insult to democracy that the World establishment has decided to thrust young people into debt to achieve that end.

Raising your nose into the air at the sight of a 2 year old playing outside in diapers is fluff no matter how important it might seem to let the world know you are disgusted. Donating clothing to help those in need is what counts. The pendulum of the mind oscillates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong.

The periodic table of elements is a very useful tool for both chemistry students and chemists. It shows all known natural elements as well as every synthetic one made in labs. Each element is placed in its own box along with several numbers. Interpreting the numbers can provide valuable information about the element. The table can be a bit overwhelming for chemistry students, however. Games and puzzles can be very useful in helping them to understand it. These activities can also be great fun. This bit I don’t. Kids can get structure and socialization from other sources besides a traditional brick-and-mortar school. Successful home-school parents are usually highly organized and structured people to begin with, so they can impart the structure thing on their kids. Also, there are many home-school cooperatives where kids get together and socialize. Plus there’s municipal sports leagues, church youth groups, 4-H, stuff like that.

Inclusive education is about the integration approach of the disabled learners in schools. It is under this inclusion model that learners with special needs spend most or all of their time with non-disabled learners. While inclusive education has its benefits, there are enormous challenges hindering its effective implementation especially in developing countries. This article briefly examines the following: Inadequate Educational Facilities, Poor Teacher Training, Poor policy implementation. There are certainly some issues with the law, but on the whole the IDEA is a requirement to allow children with disabilities to have equal access to the curriculum, and an equal opportunity to succeed. In general, the criticisms are not applicable to the majority of children receiving services under an individualized educational plan (IEP). A number of children receive reading supports, speech therapy, and other services to create an environment which fosters success. While the initial services cost taxpayers money, there are cost savings over the long term – a child who obtains an appropriate education is more likely to be employed and become a productive member of society. Refusing to educate a significant proportion of the population (up to 10% of American children receive services under the IDEA) would create a … Read more
