Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development. Major progress has been made towards increasing access to education at all levels and increasing enrolment rates in schools particularly for women and girls. Basic literacy skills have improved tremendously, yet bolder efforts are needed to make even greater strides for achieving universal education goals. For example, the world has achieved equality in primary education between girls and boys, but few countries have achieved that target at all levels of education. There is a Waldorf school in the area and I’m considering asking for a tour to see it in action, and ask a few questions. I know from working in education that it’s one thing to espouse a certain school philosophy, and sometimes quite different seeing it in action and evaluating the benefits. Websites easily make schools sound very ideal and yet it’s hard to find schools that match exactly their ideals.
My husband has read to him every night since he was very, very little, when he was not yet talking, and hardly able to sit up! We had no idea that he was dyslexic at this time. I have a video of him … Read more
Pulitzer Center offers hundreds of free lesson plans, powerful classroom engagements, professional development opportunities, university partnerships, and a variety of exciting special programs for educators from K-12 through college and beyond that connect students to pressing global issues and the journalists who cover them. Great post! I am familiar with most of the DVDs you listed. I definitely like Sesame Street and Signing Time the best out of the DVDs in your list. My kids seem to enjoy them. Have you ever heard of MonkiSee though? It might be a little young for your older child, but the 2 year old might enjoy it. My baby loves it better than most videos I turn on. It is 30 minutes per DVD and teaches animals, colors, abc, etc… I really recommend them. 🙂 Just a tip in case you are ever on the look out for other education DVDs. Sometimes fun and educational DVDs can be hard to find. 🙂 Best to you!

Students will come from an array of backgrounds and have different dialects. It is important for the teacher to model Standard American English. The students will follow the teacher, so it is necessary to set a good example by using SAE. When modeling and using SAE, it is necessary to not demean the dialect of anyone else. It is important that the students know their dialect is not wrong. Students should never feel alienated for speaking in their natural … Read more
High School education is perfect in so many areas that in order to truly comprehend its greatness, one must understand each of the aspects that make it so fantastic. From the grading system to teacher salary and student eagerness to learn, there are a wide range of qualities that make the high school education system the well-oiled-machine that it is. Great analysis, Distant Mind. Our current educational system tends toward teaching to pass standardized tests and not true learning. We must encourage our young people to analyze facts and be creative. Simple memorization will not cut it in our time nor should it.
Additionally, I’d like to point out that I’m not saying we should completely throughout Biology, Physics or Math, but we should try to dig ourselves out of the unnecessary details and try to see and understand the big picture. Let’s put the emphasis on the really fascinating stuff like the beauty, complexity and diversity of life instead of knowing each and every chemical reaction that is part of the Krebs cycle for Biology. Let’s put the emphasis of Physics on the miseries of the universe and the mindbogglingly paradoxes of the quantum world instead of solving interchangeable … Read more
From students and teachers to administrators and employers, at ETS we provide a range of solutions designed to meet the many different needs — and goals — of partners like you. I think that is a major part of it. But we also have to allow for individual personalities. A parent can do everything right and for whatever reason have a child that will not excel and will not value education. I may be wrong but I seem to remember you complaining about poor people having large families to benefit from government hand outs.

Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System ( IPED s) includes information from every college, university, and technical and vocational institution that participates in the federal student financial aid programs. Datasets include year-over-year enrollments, program completions, graduation rates, faculty and staff, finances, institutional prices, and student financial aid. My 4th grade teacher, Miss Cartarphen, whom I’ve mentioned more than once, was such an excellent and creative English grammar teacher (and some subjects do require learning what is already established knowledge in order to be able to think and create more independently!). She had an uncanny ability to INSTILL that dry subject into her students and cause us to appreciate it in such a way that we simply learned to use it almost painlessly! BUT – she lacked the educational credentials and was ultimately fired from the faculty even though she had taught some of the people on the school board who fired her! Guess they missed her lessons in wisdom.
With physics, it would be difficult to do just online courses because the students need to conduct experiments to observe for themselves the effects and see theories in action. Most wouldn’t have the necessary equipment at home to do those experiments.

Over the past twenty-five years, the educational advancement made by women has been significant. The gaps for educational attainment between the genders have all but disappeared for the young women being educated today. While girls still lag somewhat behind boys on mathematical and science achievement, girls in high school average higher grades and reach higher achievement levels in reading and writing compared to same age boys. The discrepancies in achievement by subject persist into adulthood. It has been shown that women between the ages of 16 and 65 achieved higher scores on comprehension and interpretation of prose that similar age men. There were also less women (40 percent) scoring at a low level in these areas compared to men (44 percent). Consistent with finding from earlier ages, women do not score as well as men in number related subjects such as mathematics (Sax, 2008). Great Lens: I have always found that if an activity is not fun for the adult the chances are the 3 year old will not enjoy it too. Children take their love of play from those around them. All too often parents just sit the child in front of the TV and wonder why when they … Read more
We oversee the state’s diverse public school system, which is responsible for the education of more than six million children and young adults in more than 10,000 schools with 295,000 teachers. We are in charge of enforcing education law and regulations and continuing to reform and improve public school programs. As I began to get more successful in my work life, I stopped going to junior college for a while because of my work hours and the challenges college was providing. I didn’t really have to overcome adversity in my homeschool setting, so it was a coping skill I needed but had not yet obtained.
Excellent hub. I have four children in grade school now. Fortunately, my oldest is able to attend SCF Collegiate School, she started last year for sixth grade. It’s based on a European learning style. This will be her second year in it and we couldn’t be happier.
Yes, Denise, our expectations for public school teachers are unrealistically high. They cannot be everything to everybody, but we so want them to be. With this huge push for academic rigor at younger and younger ages, I see children getting turned off to reading. They’re getting instructed on … Read more
There are many assumptions about homeless people. Perhaps the most common is that all of them are too lazy to work. Having been there myself and having worked with many others in the same situation, I have to say that for the vast majority of homeless people, the assumption that they are lazy is dead wrong. Higher education typically involves work towards a degree-level or foundation degree qualification. In most developed countries, a high proportion of the population (up to 50%) now enter higher education at some time in their lives. Higher education is therefore very important to national economies , both as a significant industry in its own right and as a source of trained and educated personnel for the rest of the economy.
Ptolemy ordered the construction of the library, which contained over 700,000 scrolls of work. There was also a rule that all ships passing through the Alexandrian harbor had to declare if they had any works of science or philosophy. If they did, the work was copied and placed in the library, and the captain would receive the original copy back. Because of this accumulation of knowledge, many great discoveries took place in the library. For … Read more
Studies have shown that people with similar educatonal and socioeconomic backgrounds have a commonality regarding dating and marriage. They tend to like and appreciate the same things. This reasoning explains why college educated, professional women are better off dating men from a similar background and/or better. It is totally unwise for a college educated, professional woman to date a blue collar man and/or a man who does not have the same level of education that she has. According to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), some professionals in the field of deafness believe that if a child learns to sign, the child will be inhibited from learning vocal and written language. The NTID says that there is no published evidence that learning sign impedes the acquisition of spoken and written language.
