Education, on the other hand, opens the mind, encourages a search for truth and develops a mind that can engage critically with many different ideas. While this method may not be possible or desirable for most homeschooling parents there are aspects of it that parents can definitely implement. A focus on the classics and discussions can be hugely beneficial to a child’s education and can easily be used alongside a more traditional curriculum.

Thank you, Judi Bee. I know of several teachers who decided to take the home-ed route after becoming disillusioned with the system. Yes, the National Curriculum in the UK is far from ideal. One of the things with home-ed is that the child is able to focus on one topic, let’s say pre-history or script-writing or music and delve into it as deeply as they wish. They can leave that subject all together or return to it at a later time.

In addition to homeschooling my son, I’m one of the organizers of a local homeschool co-op. We get together for classes once a week and enjoy such things as hands-on science experiments, recorder class, sharing the poems and stories we’ve written at home, fun writing activities, critical thinking activities, hands on activities that help us learn about various cultures, art, lunch, and of course recess.
Compliments are very unsettling to me and it makes the likelihood of me having something intelligent to say drop like a rock. I also tend to fail to understand all of the rules of social etiquette unless I can read them somewhere and even then I often fail to properly generalize them. I had nothing coherent or valuable to … Read more

I think it’s a matter of expectations. Having taken online courses and traditional courses personally, and having interacted with students and with employees with both types, there is a difference. So education gained through attending schools and colleges is not necessarily the best education or even the right education.
Not surprisingly, the Japanese students demonstrated stronger knowledge in both Calculus and Algebra. Asian students in America typically outperform other students because they are raised with a strong value for education and learning. I’ve never met Ms. Weise, but I understand that she lives just across the Bay in San Francisco, and that she’s very involved at an immersion school there.
Wow, wow, wow! I tutor dyslexic children and I am so impressed with your efforts. The kids are so special, so bright, curious, wonderful, creative… I could go on and on! I think all schools should teach their dyslexic children like you teach your son. In fact… wouldn’t all students do better with more support, more creativity and drawing, and less homework? I love everything about this hub!!!!!!

One thing that became clear is that with almost no actual teaching going on, after all these years of ‘deschooling’, our children are at the same level, if not more advanced than their peers. Education happens – and it happens in a natural way. A college degree is the key to realizing the American dream, well worth the financial sacrifice because it is supposed to open the door to a world of opportunity.

Sorry to hear that, Tamara. I don’t think it’s limited to the Croatian government though – the lack of teaching kids good ‘thinking skills’ is a worldwide problem. No point in stuffing their heads full of facts if they don’t know how to apply their knowledge. We need innovators in education; people with passion who don’t need rules and guidelines to inspire our youngsters.
I highly recommend Alpha Smarts ( since writing this Alpha Smart has stopped making these because people have lap tops these days which pretty much do the same job- so there are some bargains to be had! When your civilization discovers a new technology, a relevant quote pops up and is read by Leonard Nimoy. Truth be told, I enjoyed all the other reasons listed above as well—except for the research, which involves a lot of statistics and math, subjects I try to avoid like the plague. In 2008, for instance, international test results revealed that Filipinos were behind compared to other countries when we finished dead last in math.
Excellent, excellent and again I say: excellent. As one who homeschooled her children for years and only reluctantly sends them to a charter academy now (mama’s gotta work!), I well know that your assessments here are right on track. And you support your findings beautifully, by the way.

If they aren’t dating they are still observing others who are. They are able to view good examples as well as bad examples, and real world parenting can happen. For instance, a high school girl is able to see there is a large pool of the opposite sex, and can begin to see what traits good guys share, and what traits bad guys lack – with some guidance from her parents. But, what a traditional student lives with everyday is only abstract to a homeschooled student. Only having a description of what makes a guy a good dating choice might make it hard for a homeschooled girl to know it when she encounters it in her youth group, job or … Read more

Yes, actually. My twin nephews went to a Waldorf school for a few years. There are pro and cons. I have a lot going on, so maybe you could ask specific questions. Firstly there is the issue of very under-qualified teachers doing their best to cope with a curriculum for which they have had inadequate preparation and for which the resources are also inadequate. All the news about long-term unemployed young people, who are burdened with more than $90,000 of college debt is discouraging some young people from attending college.
