I think blaming teachers is extremely unfair. They are part of a bureaucracy with no real control over what to teach and how to teach. Teachers don’t control curricula, standards or testing. They have to make do with whatever materials, worksheets and curricula they are given, even if they believe that they are ineffective. They have to prepare students for tests that often don’t effectively test student ability. The belief that teachers are responsible for educational failure has lead to ideas like merit pay and compensation based on student performance. I know I sound just like a teacher, but reading is the most important thing you can do to help your child through life. You’ll have to trust me on that one! Here is a BBC Literacy article that talks about how research shows that fewer children are reading in their spare time.
The Periodic Videos website was established by the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. The website has videos about all 118 elements. What a fabulous resource. I’ll be coming back here again for sure! Congratulations on LotD. If you have any good ideas of things to do please add them below. Thanks in advance!

the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. Now this may feel overwhelming but it’s still possible. Anyone with a decent know-how of English or for that matter any other language can become an author. Trust me. It includes a list of good pieces and books for beginner students, tips for finding a good teacher and preparing for exams, and comparisons of the types of pianos available for purchase.

When you start again, restrict your sessions to just 15 minutes of any subject. Baby steps. Then nothing is too overwhelming. Thus, places such as YMCAs, Boy and Girl Scouts, and other such groups will rise in popularity to fill the void. I’m somewhere in the middle – I’d … Read more
However higher education is still a good but risky lifetime investment for many people. A four-year higher degree, or prolonged technical training is still great insurance for increasing job prospects and income, especially in a tough job market. Recent unemployment figures show that people with a bachelor’s degree or higher had an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent, less than half the 10.1 percent for people with only high school education. Getting a job has become the primary driver for higher education. George Burgess had four daughters, born between 1871 and 1875; sadly his wife died in 1878 so he had to bring-up his daughters on his own.
I had a classmate who is dsylexic back in highschool. He is now a successful lawyer and a father with three beautiful, smart kids. It’s wonderful how technology helps people with dyslexia. Bubba-math, you have succinctly stated an excellent poor and uneducated parents believe that they do not play a part in their children’s education, they believe that it is THE TEACHER’S job to educate their children.

Are you looking for fun, creative ways to teach the continents? I have taught 5th through 8th graders and developed a number of fun games I can share with you. These games will also work with younger students. If you try to ‘teach’ kids by lecturing to them, they are unlikely to learn much. But, turn the lesson into a game, and they will be sad when the period is over. I don’t live in the UK, but I am in grade 11(16yrs old) and still have grade 12 to complete. (Also, since I left school in the middle of the school year, I wasn’t granted any credits for grade 11, which is why I had to do ministry approved courses online to get credits, which would show up on my transcript, and I could use that for university/college admissions).
Yes, but the really bad parents will blame schools, teachers, classmates, administration, sun spots, and Bigfoot before admitting that they themselves are part of the problem. Compare and contrast the population/resources situation in Nigeria with that of other countries so as to have an insight into the international dimensions of population and family life problems.

There are many assumptions about homeless people. Perhaps the most common is that all of them are too lazy to work. Having been there myself and having worked with many others in the same situation, I have to say that for the vast majority of homeless people, the assumption that they are lazy is dead wrong. Why not have your own party at home and play lots of party games. This is particularly good if you have more than one child at home. Ideas include musical statues or balloon games. Blow up a balloon and see how long it takes to burst the balloon if you sit on it. Or see how long you can keep a balloon up in the air for. Hit the balloon to one another or play catch with balloons. My son loves simple games like this.
These types of grants can come from many places, foundations, businesses, groups and areas. Below are a few ideas where to look for mini grant funding for home-school costs. To answer the very first question…that began this thread. H_ll to the No. When do we have time to be innocent…we have our whole life to be boring adults. We should protect our innocent ones as long as possible…say at least until…Junior High! Then I would say H_ll yes…they need a good foundation in sex education to help give them proper info and help to safeguard their future. Because from that point on they will have working knowledge…and can make some proper decisions based on that information. And hopefully, the parents will have aided in their own strong beliefs and backings for their family to the child. Dunn and Dunn 49 focused on identifying relevant stimuli that may influence learning and manipulating the school environment, at about the same time as Joseph Renzulli 50 recommended varying teaching strategies. Howard Gardner 51 identified a wide range of modalities in his Multiple Intelligences theories. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Keirsey Temperament Sorter , based on the works of Jung , 52 focus on understanding how people’s personality affects the way they interact personally, and how this affects the way individuals respond to each other within the learning environment. These free reading apps for kids make it a joy to get your children engaged in reading. I see how their captivating illustrations, graphics, and games draw beginning readers into a story. Children interact with letters, words, and illustrations in ways that aren’t possible with print on paper. Some of the apps include read-along stories, which are a fantastic tool to help kids develop fluency. As recently as 20 year ago women educators were viewed as glorified baby sitters, with most high school teachers and almost all college professors being male. More recently, there has been a change of view of women teachers and an increase in the number female teachers in post elementary levels and female professors in bachelor and even graduate education. The number of female educators is still dependent on field with far more female teachers found in the humanities, social sciences and helping professional programs. Yet the overall number of female educators has increased steadily in the past decade.
It always seems funny (and sad as well) that so many people touting their wonderful education and money depend totally on the uneducated, illiterate and stupid blue collar worker for their daily needs. Without the men and … Read more
With the internet, universal access to education is possible, but its potential is hindered by increasingly restrictive copyright laws and incompatible technologies. The Open Education program at Creative Commons works to minimize these barriers, supporting the CC mission through education, advocacy and outreach on using the right licenses and open policies to maximize the benefits of open educational resources (OER) and the return on investment in publicly funded education resources. Our work cuts across all levels of education (primary – secondary – tertiary) and sectors of industry (non-profit – corporate – government). The subject involves other areas of study, including humanities, natural sciences, and the social sciences. The separation of the education department into two has made the situation worse, because accountability is now further diluted. A great article reminding us all what’s really important when bringing up children. I especially agree with limiting screen time and encouraging physical activity.

Parents appreciate the importance of early childhood education but wonder: What are the characteristics of a high-quality preschool? As a former early childhood educator and mother of two, I’ve seen which practices benefit young children, which ones don’t, and which ones are actually harmful to them (e.g. long Circle Times, teacher-directed craft projects, lengthy calendar activities, paper-pencil tasks in workbooks). One of my sons attended a non-profit parent-cooperative that strictly adhered to the teachings of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). My other son attended a privately owned preschool that came highly recommended but followed no road map other than the owner’s whim. Based on these divergent experiences, I learned how important it is that a preschool has a strong identity, a sound philosophy, and a firm understanding of developmentally appropriate practices. This bit I don’t. Kids can get structure and socialization from other sources besides a traditional brick-and-mortar school. Successful home-school parents are usually highly organized and structured people to begin with, so they can impart the structure thing on their kids. Also, there are many home-school cooperatives where kids get together and socialize. Plus there’s municipal sports leagues, church youth groups, 4-H, stuff like … Read more
The periodic table of elements is a very useful tool for both chemistry students and chemists. It shows all known natural elements as well as every synthetic one made in labs. Each element is placed in its own box along with several numbers. Interpreting the numbers can provide valuable information about the element. The table can be a bit overwhelming for chemistry students, however. Games and puzzles can be very useful in helping them to understand it. These activities can also be great fun. I think for the majority of blacks the standard of education has actually risen in recent years, but there are still too many problems, it’s true.
